swiftlyIndian Ink, 2017

Painted in 2017 after I had been living in Lisbon for several years. I was already getting used to the tell-tale sign of the Swallow with its forked tail dancing in the breeze, signifying the arrival of spring. Known as 'Andorinhas' in Portuguese, the bird was made famous by the ceramic artist Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro, who, in 1891, created ceramic versions that can still be seen on homes throughout the country. The Swallow is associated with values such as home, family, love and loyalty, as it is a migratory bird that returns every year to the same place to nest.
