Painted in 2016 shortly after I had moved to Lisbon. I was curious to capture the forked tail of this common but beautiful bird. Known as 'Andorinhas' in Portuguese, the bird was made famous by the ceramic artist Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro, who, in 1891, created ceramic versions that can still be seen on homes throughout the country. The Swallow is associated with values such as home, family, love and loyalty, as it is a migratory bird that returns every year to the same place to nest.
